Working smoke detectors highlight Fire Prevention Week

MARQUETTE — When’s the last time that you’ve checked the smoke detectors in your house? That question is part of the Marquette City Fire Department’s mission as part of Fire Prevention Week.

This year’s theme is ‘Here The Beep Where You Sleep.’ According to Marquette City Fire Department Lt. Jeff Green, studies have shown that kids sometimes have the tendency to remain asleep when smoke detectors are going off.

Building codes now require a smoke detector in every bedroom of a home. The Marquette City Fire Department uses this week to drive their message home to a select group of people.

“We gear it towards kids because kids end up being our greatest advocate as far as bringing that message home to parents,” said Green. “A lot of times mom and dads forget the common sense things or they don’t have time to check smoke detectors. We sort of utilize the kids and their ability to bring that message home.”

Green added that you should test your smoke detectors once a month to make sure that they’re working properly.
