Telephone scam reported in Iron Mountain
IRON MOUNTAIN — Police are warning the public about a phone scam that happened in Iron Mountain.
Officers from the Iron Mountain Police Department say they received a report of a caller attempting to convince a local business owner that his or her water bill had not been paid. The caller, who identified as “Mr. Green,” warned the business owner that the water would be shut off. As it was the weekend, the victim was unable to contact the water department for verification.
The caller appeared to be calling from a local number, although police say he was actually calling from a foreign country. He asked the victim to purchase a “Money Card” to make the payment.
Police are reminding the public that the City of Iron Mountain will always mail a shutoff notice prior to turning off a customer’s water. Citizens are also reminded to never give out any personal or banking information over the phone.
