BARAGA — Though some campgrounds in the U.P. have had to delay their openings due to snow, one Copper Country state park is set to open this weekend.

The snow is gone, the sun is shining, and the campground at Baraga State Park is ready to open. Many campgrounds have a semi–modern open, meaning you are welcome to come camp, but there may not be any water or electricity. But that’s not the case this weekend in Baraga.

“Well, it looks like we’re going to have really nice weather for the opening weekend of camping here at Baraga State Park,” said Baraga State Park Accounting Assistant Kelly Somero. “We’ll have our modern restrooms and shower facilities available and we’re really excited to start our 2015 camping season.”

If you’re camping in the Copper Country, Fort Wilkins State Park and McLain State Park will have a semi–modern open this weekend and be fully modern in a couple of weeks. Twin Lakes will not open until its full modern opening on May 15th.

So if you’re staying in the area, Baraga State Park may be your best bet.

“It’s graduation weekend for Michigan Tech and Northern (NMU), so we still have sites available so people looking for places to stay, we’re going to have sites available for folks,” said Somero.
