February 4th Pasty Central Day in History
On this day in 1887, the Interstate Commerce Commision was formed to regulate railroad lines like the DSS&A that spanned Upper Michigan. The first in a series of new independent agencies (or the so called Fourth Branch of the federal government) the ICC would be followed by the likes of the CIA, FCC, EPA, and FBI, to name a few, but this alphabet soup all began on this day with the regulation of railroads during the mining era.

On this day in 1902 Charles Lindberg was born in Detroit. His non-stop solo flight from New York to Paris in 1927 would spur so much interest in air travel that even the remote U.P. would see its first commercial airport opened in Escanaba less than a year later.
