NMU falls in Huntsville to Chargers
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The Northern Michigan University hockey was edged 2-1 by Alabama-Huntsville in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action Friday.
The Wildcats move to 9-7-5 with the loss with a 6-7-4 WCHA record while the Chargers improved to 6-16-3 with a 5-12-0 league record.
The Chargers scored two even-strength goals in the second period to take a 2-0 lead. Jack Prince converted an assist from Max McHugh at the 7:07 mark before Frank Msuraca scored an unassisted goal at the 13:18 mark.
The Wildcats cut the UAH lead to one goal when sophomore forward Shane Sooth scored his third goal of the season on assists from junior defenseman Barrett Kaib and sophomore forward Gerard Hanson.
The Wildcats outshot the Chargers 33-15 including an advantage of 14-2 in the third period. Both squads were unable to convert on the power play as NMU was 0-7 and UAH was 0-2. NMU was able to hold UAH to just one shot between its two power play opportunities.
Sophomore goalie Mathias Dahlstrom made 13 saves in net for the Wildcats in 58:47 of action while Carmine Guerriero made 32 saves in net for the Chargers.
Freshman forward Robbie Payne led the Wildcats with five shots while senior forward Ryan Kesti and Shine added four shots each.
NMU and UAH will complete their WCHA series on Saturday. Puck drop is set for 8:07 p.m.
