Wildcats come up short at Bemidji St.

BEMIDJI, Minn. — The Northern Michigan University hockey team dropped a 4-2 decision at Bemidji State Friday in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action.

The loss drops NMU to 8-5-2 with a 5-5-1 WCHA record. The Beavers improved to 5-10-2 with a 3-6-2 league mark.

Bemidji State took a 2-0 lead when Nate Arentz scored at the 2:25 mark of the first period and Myles Fitzgerald scored at the 18:04 mark of the second.

NMU senior forward Reed Seckel put the Wildcats on the board just 1:37 later when he finished a scoring chance from sophomore forwards Shane Sooth and Dominik Shine.

The Beavers took a two-goal lead again when Phillip Brewer scored at the 16:04 mark of the third period.

The Wildcats scored an extra-man goal when senior defenseman Jake Baker teamed up with Shine and Sooth scoring at the 17:06 mark of the third period.

Cory Ward scored an unassisted, empty net goal with just 28-seconds remaining to give the Beavers a 4-2 final advantage.

BSU outshot the Wildcats 33-22 in the contest. BSU was 0-2 on the power play while NMU did not have any power play opportunities.

Junior goalie Michael Doan made his first start in net this season for the Wildcats, recording 29 saves, including 15 in the third period.

Shine led NMU with five shots while Seckel had four.

NMU and Bemidji State wrap up their WCHA series on Saturday. Puck drop is set for 8:07 p.m.
