Mustangs ‘D’ faces tough test vs. Saints

MUNISING – The Munising Mustangs football team made a statement last week in their opening playoff game, in the form of a 54-0 beat down of Indian River Inland Lakes.

‘Stang Nation’ can make another statement this week with a win at undefeated St. Ignace. As potent and powerful as Munising’s offense is, the Mustangs take just as much pride in playing great defense. Munising’s ‘D’ has allowed a stingy 5.8 points per game, pitching five shutouts.

“The kids are just playing tough,” said Mustangs head coach Jeff Seaberg about his team’s defense. “They take a lot of pride in their defense. They don’t like to give up scores and they’re pretty upset when they have had that happen during the year. They’re doing an excellent job all the way around upfront, our defensive backs and our line backing core are just playing tough defense.”

“We all like to play defense. We have a lot of guys that can rotate in, our starters are really good. Most people are playing both sides of the ball, but we have guys that come in all the time and fill in for them if they need it,” said Mustangs running back Garrett Blank. “I feel like we’re going to keep our run game and if our (offensive) line is good, our backs will be good too,” added Blank.

“We take a lot of pride in shutting teams out. That’s one of our goals every game,” said Munising linebacker Alex Hill. “We get really mad if they get a first down…. it’s like it’s a personal battle to stop them.”

“I think we’re pretty solid everywhere,” said Mustangs lineman Jason Lindbeck. “Our defensive line is solid, our linebackers are good and our pass coverage is great. I think that’s what makes it so hard to score on us. Offense is important, but defense is what wins the game.”

The Saints high powered offense averages 54 points per game. This will be the fifth all–time meeting between Munising and St. Ignace. Saturday’s game will be at St. Ignace, with kickoff set for 1 p.m.
