NMU soccer falls in overtime vs. ODU

MARQUETTE, Mich. – For the fourth time in as many games the Northern Michigan University soccer team found itself in overtime as the Wildcats lost 3-2 to Ohio Dominican in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action Sunday.

The loss drops NMU to 2-6-1 overall with a 0-4 league mark. Ohio Dominican improved to 6-3-1 with a 3-1-1 league record.

Ohio Dominican’s Jordan Mazzi scored her second goal of the season, unassisted, in the 15th minute to give the Panthers a 1-0 advantage.

Just 14-seconds later, NMU sophomore Carmen Villarruel scored her third goal of the season when she chipped the ball past the keeper and into an open net from eight yards out.

NMU sophomore Paula Hafner gave the Wildcats a 2-1 lead in the 47th minute (46:28) when she beat Ohio Dominican goalkeeper Kelsey Harris to the far post from 12 yards out. It was the fifth score on the season for Hafner.

Kethryn Mattingly netted the equalizer in the 62nd minute (61:42) when she converted a penalty kick and scored her first goal of the season.

Ashley Blake scored the game winner in the 105th minute (104:49) when she took a pass from Jessica Gross behind the defense and scored a goal from six yards out.

The Panthers outshot the Wildcats 25-12 including a 13-4 advantage in shots on goal.

Hafner hit both the post during regulation and the cross bar in overtime.

Sophomore goalkeeper Caroline Glantz played the full game in net for the Wildcats making nine saves in net. Harris made one save in net for the Panthers in the win.

The Wildcats return to action at Lake Erie in a 1 p.m. matchup on Oct. 10.
