PAWS surprises tourists on Mackinac Island

MACKINAC ISLAND – If you happened to be touring Mackinac Island Saturday, you may have spotted a larger than life tiger roaming the grounds.

PAWS, the Detroit Tigers Mascot, visited Mackinaw City and Mackinac Island. He was running all over Schepler’s in Mackinaw City. Everyone wanted their picture taken with PAWS. A few lucky kids even scored an autograph from the larger than life Tiger.

PAWS did eventually get onto a boat, where he took the reigns from the captain and drove the boat to the island. The Detroit Tigers mascot had himself a blast at Mackinac Island.

PAWS even found a little time to help make some fudge at one of the fudge shops. Even with Gov. Snyder in town, PAWS was the most popular person, or in this case, animal on the island.

“It’s pretty cool… it’s a pretty unique experience,”  said Jason Wiley, a Deck Master at Schepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry. “A family atmosphere is what we try to portray, so to have him (PAWS) up here and running around doing his thing, it’s neat.”

“We never see him,” said Kim Kolatski, who is a General Manager at Mackinac Resorts, which is located on the island. “It was exciting to see him around here promoting Michigan and Detroit.”

PAWS may make another appearance at Mackinac Island next summer.
