Lions men’s soccer team wins pair of games
Jacksonville, IL – The Finlandia men’s soccer team played Mac Murray College and Eureka College this past weekend in Jacksonville, IL. The Lions scored 13 goals in two games as they defeated the Highlanders 5-0 on Saturday and the Red Devils 8-0.
For Finlandia, freshman Saul Ibarra (Riverside, CA) came away with a hat trick in his first collegiate contest as he scored at the 10′ mark, at 20’45”, and at 49’45”. Freshmen Tyler McCullough (Farmington, MI) and Tyler Borkadi (Escanaba, MI) each recorded their first collegiate goals in this game against Mac Murray. McCullough’s came off a penalty kick at 46′ and Borkadi’s was assisted by Juan Tapia (Fullerton, CA) at the 89′ mark. Freshman Brandon Roeske (Marysville, MI) earned his first collegiate win and shutout as he recorded 8 saves as keeper.
Ibarra recorded his second collegiate hat trick in his second game as a Lion as he scored at 5’45”, 13’45” and 27′ in the first half against Eureka. The first two goals were unassisted, while the third was assisted by McCullough. Freshman Christian Martinez (San Bernardino, CA) recorded his first collegiate hat trick for the Lions when he scored three goals in the first half as well at 11′, 26′, and 43′. His first two goals were unassisted as well and his third was also assisted by McCullough. Along with his two assists, McCullough also added a goal at the 11′ mark of the first half which was assisted by sophomore Jaime Cuevas (San Bernardino, CA).
Wrapping up the scoring for the Lions was senior Cole Workman (Howell, MI) as he scored an unassisted goal at 46′. Roeske and freshman Jordan Darnell (Imlay City, MI) shared the shutout for the Lions with Roeske getting the win.
Finlandia men’s soccer starts the season 2-0 and has head coach Brent Chase undefeated as coach of the Lions.
Next up for the men’s soccer team is a trip to Chicago, IL where they will face Moody Bible Institute on Saturday, Sept. 6 and Illinois Institute of Technology on Sunday, Sept. 7.
