This week, the City of Houghton found itself amongst some good company on a list of the best towns in the entire country.
Outside Magazine named their 16 best towns in the U.S. and Houghton was ranked #15.
It was part of a poll that incorporated nearly 1.5 million votes from readers. Each town was also given an O-Score which combines factors like miles of trails, number of bike shops and median incomes into a single mathematical formula. Houghton received a 76 O-Score and just over 26,000 votes.
The magazine praised Houghton’s annual snowfall as well as the mountain bike trails at Copper Harbor, which the article calls “the most under appreciated in the country.”
Number one on the list was Duluth, Minnesota with an 88 O-Score and over 220,000 votes.
