Gladstone one win away from state title
GLADWIN – The Gladstone Indians have pitched two shutouts in their two games at the American Legion State Baseball Tournament. Gladstone defeated host Gladwin on Friday, 7-0. Jake Peterson pitched all seven innings, racking up nine strikeouts.
Gladstone can win the Class ‘A’ State Championship with one more win. The Indians await the winner of the Gladwin vs. Escanaba game, which is scheduled for Saturday at 11am. Gladstone will take on the winner of the game at 2pm. Since Gladstone is still undefeated at the tournament, so the Indians would have to be defeated twice by either Escanaba or Gladwin in the final(s). A second championship game would be played on Sunday.
The Escanaba Cubs won two elimination games on Friday to keep their title hopes alive. The Cubs defeated Hudson, 6-1. Hudson Post 180 won the state championship last year. Escanaba then defeated Petoskey, 10-6.
The Marquette Blues lost early on Friday to Petoskey, 6-5, ending their tournament run. Marquette finishes the season with a 44-17 record.
