Waterman explains his move to Negaunee

Dan Waterman is the new boys varsity basketball coach at Negaunee. Waterman spent the last four seasons coaching the boys varsity team at Munising.

Leaving the Mustangs was a tough call for Waterman. Munising has enough talent returning this winter to make a potential run to East Lansing. When it came down to it, Waterman said he just couldn’t turn down the opportunity to coach the Miners.

“I think it’s (Negaunee) arguably the best basketball program in the U.P. and its highly regarded through the state,” said Waterman. “The opportunity to coach at this program was not going to come open again probably during my coaching career.”

“It’s not easy to leave those guys behind,” said Waterman about leaving the Mustangs basketball program. “We had two four-year varsity players coming back and three third-year varsity players coming back. It was a difficult decision, but in the end for family reasons and for the opportunity to coach at Negaunee it was something I had to do.”

Waterman will teach middle school math at Negaunee this fall. His family lives in Negaunee, so his drive to work will be a little bit shorter. In addition to coaching the boys varsity basketball team, Waterman will be an assistant varsity football coach at Negaunee.
