Commercial drivers in Houghton County that need to renew their medical certificates do not have to travel very far.

Aspirus Keweenaw has four providers between the Lake Linden, Laurium, and Houghton clinics, all of which are listed on the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners.

Dr. Glenn Kauppila is one of those examiners and said it is important to keep your paperwork up to date.

“It’s important for drivers to have these physicals, mostly it’s required by the Department of Transportation to have these physicals. The government wants to assure that truck drivers are safe on the road. So we’re trying to help truck drivers be as healthy as they can be and be safe on the road,” he said.

Kauppila added the examination is generally standard.

“It’s the typical type of physical that you would expect when you come to a doctor’s office but we’re looking for other conditions that may effect a driver’s ability to safely operate a truck.”

All commercial drivers in Houghton County whose current medical certificate expires on or after May 21 are encouraged to contact one of the examiners on the list to set up an appointment.
