Seckel leads Wildcats past the Chargers

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Junior forward Reed Seckel scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the Northern Michigan University hockey team to a 4-1 win at Western Collegiate Hockey Association foe Alabama-Huntsville Friday.
With the win, the Wildcats improve to 14-19-2 overall with a 12-14-1 WCHA record. UAH fell to 2-34-1 with a 2-24-1 league mark.
Freshman defenseman Brock Maschmeyer got the Wildcats on the board in the first with a power play goal from senior forward Stephan Vigier and junior defenseman Mitch Jones at the 4:56 mark of the opening frame.
Freshman forward Dominik Shine gave the Wildcats a 2-0 advantage early in the second (1:06) from Seckel.
Alabama-Huntsville cut the NMU lead to 2-1 when Cody Marooney scored on assists from Brandon Carlson and Craig Pierce at the 16:02 mark of the second.
Seckel scored to put NMU up 3-1 with four-seconds remaining in the second (19:56) on assists from freshman forward Shane Sooth and senior defenseman Wade Epp.
Seckel scored the final goal of the contest to put the Wildcats up 4-1 at the 7:45 mark of the third on an assist from Shine.
The Wildcats outshot Alabama-Huntsville 42-28 including a 16-9 edge in the first period.
Freshman goalie Mathias Dahlstrom made 27 saves in net for the Wildcats improving his record to 13-17-2 on the season. Matt Larose made 38 saves in goal for the Chargers falling to 1-17-1 on the campaign playing 59:46 in net for UAH.
Northern Michigan was 1-3 on the power play and 5-6 on the penalty kill. Seckel led the Wildcats with three points followed by Shine with two.
The Wildcats will complete the regular season with their series finale at Alabama-Huntsville at 8:07 p.m. Saturday.
