Gwinn High School promotes community health through wellness fair

This weekend, Gwinn High School is helping the community get healthier through a first-ever wellness fair that it’s calling “Love Your Heart”.

Local businesses and nonprofit organizations will have presentations on everything from yoga to chiropractic medicine to healthy eating, but a contest involving a type of food that isn’t often viewed as healthy may be attracting the most attention.

“We’re having a chili cook-off,” Gwinn Area Community Schools food service director Barbie Ward-Thomas said. “Right now, we have six restaurants that are involved in this…Up North Lodge, we have Full Throttle, the Gwinn Inn, the Hideaway, there’s Rodney’s and Black Bear Grill.”

“Listening to people around the school, they’re coming just so they can taste the chili,” Gwinn Teen Clinic program coordinator Lorri Smith said. “We have some of the student groups here doing tables. One’s going to have smoothies, where participants can come and taste a green smoothie, maybe for the first time.”

The fair is this Sunday from 1 to 4, and admission is free.
