NMU Hockey loses to Ferris State

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University hockey team dropped a 7-1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association matchup to No. 4/5 Ferris State Friday at Ewigleben Arena.
The loss moves NMU to 11-14-2 with a 9-9-1 WCHA record. The Bulldogs improved to 19-6-3 overall with a 14-3-2 league mark.
Kenny Babinski put the Bulldogs on the board with a power play goal from Jason Brinkley and Andy Huff at the 11:13 mark of the first period.
NMU senior Erik Higby scored his eighth goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1 at the 15:05 mark of the first. Junior forward Reed Seckel assisted on the play.
Ferris State then scored three goals in the second and three goals in the third period to set the final tally. Matt Robertson, Garrett Thompson and Chad McDonald scored in the second while Brandon Anselmini, Cory Kane and Thompson recorded goals in the third period.
Ferris State outshot NMU 31-30. The Wildcats went 1-5 on the power play while the Bulldogs were 2-5 on the power play. Higby led NMU with five shots on goal.
Freshman goalie Mathias Dahlstrom dropped to 10-12-2 on the season after recording 21 saves in net for the Wildcats in 44:05 minutes of action. Freshman goalie Derek Dun made three saves in 15:55 minutes of action for in his second appearance in net for the Wildcats. CJ Motte recoded the win for Ferris State making 29 saves.
Northern Michigan completes its WCHA series at Ferris State at 7:07 p.m. Saturday.
