NMU’s Jones earns WCHA award

MARQUETTE, Mich. – Northern Michigan University defenseman Mitch Jones was named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Defensive Player of the Week following his performance at Alaska-Anchorage last week (Jan. 24-25).
A 6-2, 203-pound junior from Delta, British Columbia, Jones led the Wildcats on the weekend with three points. On Friday, Jones helped anchor the Wildcats defense which held the Seawolves to just one goal and on 23 shots while scoring NMU’s first two goals, including the game-winner, en route to a 3-1 win.
On Saturday, Jones assisted on NMU’s first goal of the contest to cut into the Alaska-Anchorage lead 2-1 in the eventual 4-2 loss.
Jones’ goals were his first of the season while he ranks second on the squad in scoring with 15 points and leads the Wildcats with 13 assists and a +6 plus/minus rating.
NMU returns to the Berry Events Center at 7:07 p.m. Friday (Jan. 31) to host Minnesota State-Mankato.
