Warming center open in Marquette
For people looking to get out of the cold, the city of Marquette is offering an emergency warming shelter through Tuesday.
City Hall and the Marquette Senior Center are being utilized as warming centers so people walking downtown have a chance to warm up, and have a place to go to escape the bitterly cold temperatures.
“We decided to make this available because people know where City Hall is, people are stopping by to pay bills,” Management Analyst with the City Manager’s Office Jen LaPage said. “We’re just a general community area. People are allowed to come in no matter what, if it was hot or cold…anytime people are encouraged to stop by and see us.”
Coffee and hot water is available for those who stop in.
“Anyone can use the warming center, you don’t have to be a resident of the city. Even if you’re passing by and you need to walk through City Hall…City Hall is big, you can walk through it just to warm up your face, your hands, your feet…and anyone that needs to use it is welcome to stop by,” LaPage said.
The warming center is open during normal City Hall business hours Tuesday, January 7 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The city’s website will also have information if the warming center will be open again this winter.
