Huskies advance to GLI title game
The Michigan Tech University hockey team has a spot in the Great Lakes Invitational title game on Saturday, after the Huskies defeated Michigan State, 2-1 in a shootout on Friday. The Huskies and Spartans finished regulation and overtime tied at 2-2.
Michigan Tech forward Jacob Johnstone opened the scoring in the second period with his first goal of the season. Blake Hietala and Tyler Heinonen each tallied an assist on the goal. The Huskies led 1-0 after two periods of play.
Michigan State scored two goals in the first five minutes of the third period to take a 2-1 lead. Huskies sophomore forward Alex Petan tied the game midway through the third period off of a pass from behind the net by Mike Neville.
In the shootout, MTU forwards Tanner Kero and Ryan Furne each scored a goal. Furne had the game winning goal in the shootout. Huskies goalie Phoenix Copley stopped 24 shots.
The Huskies will play in the GLI title game tomorrow night against either Michigan or Western Michigan. Puck drop is set for 7:07 p.m.
