Plans for U.P. Military Cemetery moving forward
Efforts are heating up to establish a military cemetery for Upper Peninsula veterans. State Representative Scott Dianda was among those who recently met with Michigan D-N-R Director Keith Craig about acquiring land for the facility. Dianda says it would be especially appropriate for our area… considering how many of our residents are veterans.
He says it’s been an issue in discussion for more than a decade and that he’d like to see the land acquisition aspect resolved as soon as possible.
Dianda says about 11 percent of the population in the seven counties of the Copper Country and western U.P. regions have served in the military.
Right now, the closest military cemetery is at Fort Custer… near Battle Creek.
