U.P. rivals split weekend series
The Michigan Tech hockey team scored two goals in the first period in a 4-1 win over arch rival Northern Michigan on Saturday, Oct. 26 in Houghton. Northern Michigan won the first game of the series, 2-0 on Friday, Oct. 25 in Marquette.
The victory over the Wildcats was the first win of the season for the Huskies. Michigan Tech forward Blake Hietala scored two goals in the first period. Alex Petan and David Johnstone scored both goals for the Huskies in the second period. Phoenix Copley made 14 saves between the pipes for MTU.
Stephan Vigier scored the lone goal for Northern Michigan. Freshman goaltender Matthias Dahlstrom stopped 29 shots for the Wildcats.
With the win, the Huskies improved their record to 1-4-1. Northern Michigan is now 2-4-0 to begin the season. The two rivals will play another home and home series in February.
