NMU defeats Tech in volleyball
The Northern Michigan University volleyball team held on for a 3-1 victory over arch rival Michigan Tech on Tuesday night at Houghton. The Huskies won the first set 25-20, only to watch the Wildcats win the next three in a row.
With the victory, NMU is now 10-4 this season with a 4-1 conference record. “What an exciting environment that Michigan Tech puts together here with the band and all the students that were out tonight,” NMU coach Dominic Yoder said in a release to the media. “It was a really volatile place for us to play but so exciting and energetic for the sport of volleyball.”
The Wildcats were led offensively by senior Sarah Hamilton, who had a career high 18 kills in the match. Fellow senior Kellisha Harley compiled 53 sets and 11 digs in the match.
“My two words to Kellisha after set one, where we weren’t scoring a lot, was ‘Set Sarah’,” said Yoder. “We gave her a lot of chances and Michigan Tech didn’t have an answer for her because they were focusing on our two left-side hitters.”
With the loss, Michigan Tech is now 6-8 this season with a 3-2 record in GLIAC play. Aubrey Ficek led MTU in kills with 14. Madeline Haben had 39 assists for the Huskies.
