Veterans honored with appreciation event
Dozens of former service men and women were on hand for a veterans appreciation event in Marquette Tuesday afternoon in recognition of National 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance.
The event started with the Pledge of Allegiance and singing of the National Anthem. Veterans were given pins to commemorate their service, and students from Marquette Alternative High School gave them gift bags.
Having a younger generation help honor those who served our country keeps the veterans’ history alive.
“Those of us who are old enough to remember 9/11, that was twelve years ago,” Volunteer and Activity Coordinator for the Jacobetti Home for Veterans Ken Arseneau said. “There are people alive now who don’t remember that. As these youngsters grow up, they need to be aware of of the things that happened in the past and the importance of it. That goes for 9/11, that goes for World War II, Vietnam…pick your conflict, pick your tragedy.”
Arsensau said it is important to honor those who died in 9/11 because they gave their lives and stepped up for their country. 9/11 is also called Patriot Day, a day that extends to everyone who sacrifices themselves for America.
“Veterans are a natural example of that,” Arseneau said. “They also came when they were called and some did give their life. Those that didn’t are here, and we need to recognize their efforts also.”
After the ceremony, students served refreshments and were able talk with the veterans.
