USOEC wrestler wins gold

MARQUETTE, Mich. – United States Olympic Education Center Greco-Roman wrestler Isaiah Varona won gold and earned a spot on the Junior World Championship Team yesterday (June 23) at the FILA Junior World Team Trials in Stillwater, Okla.
Varona, of Miami, faced USOEC teammate Arthur Carmona, of Brawley, Calif., in the 55-kilogram championship. Varona took the victory in three periods, winning 3-0 in the first, but getting pinned in the second at 3:06. In the third and decisive round, Varona took the decision 1-0.
Varona had a bye for the qualifying rounds because he came into the competition as the reigning national champion for his weight class.
The Junior World Championships will take place Aug. 13-18 in Sofia, Bulgaria.
