Girls B-Ball All-Star game preview

The high school girls basketball season here in the U.P. was a memorable one, as St. Ignace La Salle was the only school above the ‘Mighty Mac’ to win a state championship.

Between the boys and the girls, a number of players from the recently graduated senior class will get the chance to suit up and play in one more game.

The 28th annual U.P. All-Star Classic basketball game is set for Saturday, June 22, at St. Ignace La Salle High School. There will be two games starting with the girls at noon, followed by the boys at 2pm.

The games will feature the North vs. the South.

Blaire Zenner (Houghton), Kylee Erickson (West Iron County), and Zoey McGeshick (Ewen-Trout Creek) are among the girls on the North team.

Ben Smith will coach the North team. The Marquette girls varsity basketball coach is ecstatic to be coaching the North team for a second time.

“It’s a great recognition for the kids. Every time I have been there as a fan, player, or a coach and just hear what the kids and people think, its a really cool thing,” said Smith.

“The kids that will be in this game obviously have fun with the game because they have to put in a ton of time to be as good as they really are to get rewarded with that. I think they are all competitors and I think when it comes right down to it, they are all going to try and get the job done on every possession- it should be a really good time,” added Smith.

Dorene Ingalls of the state champion Saints will coach the South team. Like Smith, Ingalls has a talented roster, including Carlee Benzie (Kingsford), Bailey Grayvold (Norway), and Sarah Madalinski (Bark River-Harris).

We will preview the boys all-star game Wednesday during sports at 5:30 and 11 on ABC 10.
