Ill. man dies in Dickinson Co. well

A 77-year-old man from Orland Park, Illinois has died after making repairs to a well in Dickinson County Wednesday afternoon.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police at the Iron Mountain Post responded to a camp in Waucedah Township just before 2 p.m. CST.

The man had climbed into a 12 foot-deep well, and his friend lowered dry ice that would be used to repair the well.  The dry ice reacted, and removed the oxygen from the bottom of the well.

The man lost consciousness while attempting to climb out.  Rescue personnel arrived on scene, removed the man from the well and attempted CPR.  The man could not be revived.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Department, Beacon Ambulance, Nordic Ambulance, Tri-City Rescue, Felch Township Fire Department and North Breitung Fire Department also responded at the scene.
