Wildcats track meet moved indoors

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University outdoor track and field team turned back into the indoor team on Saturday (April 20) as the Wildcats competed at the Al Owens Classic on the campus of Grand Valley State University. The meet was moved indoors in the morning after freezing rain left a layer of ice on the outdoor track overnight.

The Wildcats had four top five finishers on the day. Sophomore Brittni Wirtz had a second place finish in the 60-meter dash in 8.01 seconds and was also 11th place in the 200 in 26.87. Junior Cheyenne Stewart was second in the long jump, clearing 17 feet, 11 inches and senior Colby West was fourth in the 300 hurdles in 47.56 seconds.

Six Wildcats were in the top 20 in the 5K led by sophomore Olivia Howard (18:19.73) in third. Junior Chelsea Farquhar and sophomore Emily Allen were eighth and ninth. Junior Mallory Celaya (13th), senior Rita Woitas (14th) and junior Evelyne Ruiz (16th) also finished together.

Celaya (10:42.3) took sixth in the 3K followed by teammates Ruiz in ninth and redshirt freshman Abby Roche in 13th. Junior Sydney Schultz was eighth in the 400 in 1:00.37. The 4×400 relay team finished fifth Sophomores Katie Granquist (16th – 800) and Mary Dillow (17th – discus) also had top 20 finishes at the classic.

Northern has a week off before traveling to Ashland, Ohio for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships on May 1-3.
