Season over for NMU Women’s B-Ball

ASHLAND, Ohio – The No. 8-seeded Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team was defeated by No. 1-seeded Ashland University on Wednesday (March 6) evening in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Quarterfinal meeting. The Eagles took the 68-35 victory over the Wildcats from Kates Gymnasium.
Northern ends the season with a 13-14 record. Ashland improves to 29-1 overall and will host the GLIAC Championship this weekend.
The Eagles held NMU to a season-low 35 points and 26.5 percent (13-of-49) shooting from the floor.
The home team outscored the ‘Cats 26-11 in the first 11 minutes of the game and led 38-19 at halftime. In the second half, the Eagles outscored NMU 30-16 and closed out the game on a 17-5 run in the final eight minutes.
Sophomore guards Alyssa Colla and Lauren Gruber each entered the scoring column with eight points while freshman forward Nea Makela added five. Colla also had seven rebounds and sophomore forward Brooke Coenen added five.
Daiva Gerbec (21), Alyssa Miller (18) and Kari Daugherty (11) all scored in double figures for the Eagles. Daugherty also had 10 rebounds. As a team, Ashland shot 27-for-61 (44.3 percent) from the field, 5-for-15 (33.3 percent) from the three-point line and 9-for-13 (69.2 percent) at the free throw line.
