NMU sending six to Skiing Championships

MARQUETTE, Mich. – Six Northern Michigan University Nordic skiers have been selected to race at the NCAA Skiing Championship and coach Sten Fjeldheim was named the Central Collegiate Ski Association women’s Coach of the Year. This year’s NCAA Championship is March 6-9 in Middlebury, Vt.
The women’s qualifiers are juniors Jordyn Ross and Rosie Frankowski along with freshman Mary Kate Cirelli. The men’s team will send juniors George Cartwright and Erik Soderman and sophomore Kyle Bratrud.
NCAA Nordic events will be held at Rikert Nordic Center, with a men’s 10-kilometer and women’s 5K interval start classic to be held Thursday, March 7, and a mass start free (20K for men, 15K for women) taking place on Saturday, March 9.
Fjeldheim enjoyed another exceptional season at the helm of the women’s team. He guided the team to the CCSA Championship title for the second straight season. With arguably the deepest team in the region, the Wildcats qualified a full women’s contingent for the NCAA Championship and claimed four of the top five spots on the final CCSA rankings, includingthe top overall female skier in Rosie Frankowski.
The NCAA Skiing Championship is a coed event that combines both teams’ scores in the Alpine and Nordic disciplines.
A school can qualify a maximum of six athletes per discipline, with the most that can qualify being 12 athletes, six per Alpine and six per Nordic.
