Multiple vehicle accident closes U.S. 2 in Mackinac County

U.S. 2 was closed for hours today after weather conditions caused a five vehicle accident Wednesday morning.

The Mackinac County Sheriff’s Department said the accident happened on U.S. 2 near Borgstrom Road in Mackinac County, about 25 miles west of St. Ignace, at around 11:20 a.m.

White-out conditions, snow covered and slippery roads were factors in the accident.

A westbound semi-truck lost control and jack-knifed, blocking the roadway.  A vehicle following the truck stopped and parked on the side of the road.  A second westbound semi-truck lost control and struck the vehicle that was stopped on the side of U.S. 2, then struck the jack-knifed semi-truck.

The second semi-truck jack-knifed and blocked the road as well.  An eastbound semi-truck stopped due to the accident, and another semi-truck traveling eastbound tried to avoid the semi.  That driver was unable to stop, and hit the stopped eastbound semi-truck, spilling its load of 20 large rolls of paper onto the road.

No one was injured, and the accident is still under investigation.

The Michigan State Police, Michigan DNR officer, MDOT and the Mackinac County Emergency Services all assisted at the scene.
