Wildcats sweep series at St. Cloud

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The Northern Michigan University hockey team completed the weekend sweep over non-conference and No. 15-ranked St. Cloud State on Saturday (Jan. 5) from the National Hockey and Event Center. The Wildcats scored a goal in the second and third periods and defeated the Huskies 2-1 for the first road series sweep of the season.

NMU is now 8-10-3 on the season and is 6-1 against opponents from the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. There is one non-conference game left on the schedule at Michigan Tech on Feb. 12.

After a scoreless first period, St. Cloud climbed onto the scoreboard first with a goal by Jonny Brodzinski 9:37 into the second frame. Drew LaBlanc and Nick Jensen assisted on the goal.

Senior defenseman Kyle Follmer scored his second of the weekend and season to tie the game at one with less than a minute left in second period. Sophomore forward Reed Seckel and senior forward Matt Thurber assisted on the goal.

Seckel scored his third of the weekend for the game-winner midway through the third. Junior defenseman Austin Handley picked up his first point of the season with the assist. Junior forward Erik Higby had the secondary assist for his fourth of the weekend.

Junior goaltender Jared Coreau stopped over 30 shots for the 11th time this season with 37 saves. Ryan Faragher made 19 saves for the Huskies.

NMU was 0-for-1 on the power play and St. Cloud was 0-for-3.

Northern returns to Central Collegiate Hockey Association play next weekend, hosting Miami at the Berry Events Center.
