Some scam artists are beginning the New Year with a new phone scam in the Copper Country. The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office says the scammers are targeting the elderly in the area.

The scammer calls stating you can claim a multimillion dollar prize if you send the caller a check to cover the taxes. The scam also tells you to go to Wal-Mart and purchase a money gram card, putting between $500 and $1000 on the card.

The caller then states to forward them the money gram pin number in order to claim your prize. Anyone receiving one of these phony call scams should contact the Sheriff’s department.
