NMU Women's hoops headed to Ohio

MARQUETTE, Mich. – After sweeping both of its games last week, the Northern Michigan University women’s basketball looks to extend its winning streak with a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games in Ohio. The Wildcats (6-2; 3-1 GLIAC) will tip off against Ohio Dominican on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. and then play Tiffin on Tuesday 8 p.m.

Head coach Troy Mattson’s squad is 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the GLIAC, tying them for second in the North division. On Dec. 6, NMU defeated Hillsdale 58-48, and then completed the weekend with a 59-49 victory over the Findlay, giving the Oilers its first loss of the season on Dec. 8.

Sophomore guards Lauren Gruber and Alyssa Colla lead the ‘Cats in scoring. Gruber is second in the GLIAC in three-pointer percentage (54.8) and is averaging 12.9 points per game. Colla is averaging 10.8 points in 33.1 minutes. Freshman forward Nea Makela is averaging 8.1 points and 6.1 rebounds.

Ohio Dominican (3-5; 0-5 GLIAC) comes into the matchup on a five game losing streak. The Panthers were defeated by Ferris State (69-56) and Grand Valley State (65-38) last weekend. Michigan Tech defeated the Panthers on Thursday, 78-51. Kacee Hockenberry leads the Panthers with an average of 13.4 points a game and a total of 4.5 rebounds each game.

Tiffin (3-4; 1-3 GLIAC) fell in both of its games last weekend to Grand Valley (59-38) and Ferris State (61-51). Before taking on NMU on Tuesday, the Dragons will face Tech on Saturday. Leading the way for Tiffin is MacKenzie Storlie and Karli Mast, both averaging 12 points a game. Jessica Harris dominates all rebounders with an average of 10 boards a game.
