MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Michigan Tech cross country teams posted strong
finishes Saturday (Sept. 29) at the Roy Griak Invitational, the largest
cross country meet in the nation. The men’s team finished 17th and the
women were 28th.
Eric Parsell led the men with a 56th place finish in the eight-kilometer
race in a time of 26:59.
The next four runners for the Huskies all finished within 17 seconds of
each other. Bradon Kampstra led the charge finishing 83rd (27:21), followed
by Alex Gietek in 95th (27:34) and Nick Wimmer in 101st (27:35). Kyle
Hanson completed the scoring for the Huskies crossing the line 104th
(27:38).
“Our men’s team really improved from last year,” said head coach Joe
Haggenmiller. “It was great to see Eric break 27 minutes and see the rest
of our men battling hard today.”
Amanda Halonen, who was competing at the Roy Griak for the final time,
finished 29th in the women’s six kilometer race in a time of 23:37. She was
followed by Megan Smaby who finished 137th (25:22).
“Amanda had a really solid day,” said Haggenmiller. “Megan also had a
strong race today.”
Lynn Duijndam and Nichole Wehner finished 201st and 202nd in a time of
26:28, and Amber Peabody was 204th (26:39).
Both teams will return to action Oct. 12th at the Upper Peninsula
Championships in Marquette, Mich.
