Houghton Co. Circuit Court Docket

Several cases were brought before Houghton County Circuit Court Judge Charles Goodman this afternoon.

First up was 26-year-old Chassell meth lab suspect Michael Newberry, who has pleaded not guilty to charges regarding the possession and manufacturing of methamphetamine.

Both charges carry maximum penalties of 20 years in prison and fines of $25,000.

A trial will be set for late November or early December with a pre-trial conference in 30 days.

Judge Goodman once again denied a request to reduce Newberry’s bond.

The trial begins tomorrow for Michael Hylton of Hancock.

He’s charged with first-degree home invasion and larceny in a building.

The defendant made one last appearance before the judge in a status conference today.

Hylton is accused of stealing a purse from an elderly Hancock woman last November.

A co-defendant in the case, Corey Hansen of South Range, was sentenced to one year in jail in March.

A new trial was set for late November or early December for 20–year–old Gordon Lewis. A previous trial for safebreaking ended in a mistrial.

That charge is from an alleged break–in attempt of an ATM at the Miner’s State Bank in South Range last fall.

Judge Goodman recommended that Lewis first be put on trial for another case against him for larceny in a building concerning a theft at Michigan Tech’s Student Development Complex in the spring of 2011.  That trial was then set for late October or early November.

Finally, 26–year old Philip Provost stood mute on two charges of Breaking and Entering with Intent.

The felonies are punishable by ten years in prison.

Provost is accused of breaking into two businesses in Lake Linden in July.

Because he stood mute on the charges, the court entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.

The prosecution indicated that a plea agreement could be reached by the time Provost appears for a pre–trial hearing in two weeks.
