Marquette, Mich.—USA Weightlifting has announced that it will appoint Vance Newgard as head coach to lead the program at the United States Education Olympic Center on the Northern Michigan University campus. Newgard, who has been interim coach since December, replaces Andy Tysz.
Newgard has been the assistant coach in the USOEC program for two years, guiding many of the younger athletes in the program to higher levels of competitive performance. His familiarity with the NMU program and USA Weightlifting provides a firm foundation for his responsibilities in his new position.
“My five years at the USOEC as an athlete and coach have allowed me to relate well to being a student athlete,” said Newgard. “Being here that amount of time enables me to develop ties within the university and local community, as well as the weightlifting community.”
Newgard has also served as a strength coach for a variety of sports. He has also trained as an athlete in both Olympic weightlifting and bobsled.
Newgard’s appointment will be finalized when USA Weightlifting and Northern Michigan University complete the contract for the residential program for 2012-13. The two organizations have reached an agreement in principle to continue the program at NMU for the upcoming academic year.
