NMU Hockey gets road win vs. Miami

OXFORD, Ohio – The No. 19-ranked Northern Michigan hockey team picked up its third win in a row over No. 17 Miami on Friday (Jan. 27) evening from Steve Caddy Arena, defeating the RedHawks 2-1. The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead and sophomore goaltender Jared Coreau stopped 40 shots to move NMU’s record to 12-8-5 overall and 7-7-5-2 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.
Senior forward Justin Florek opened the game’s scoring with his 14th tally of the season 11:35 into the game. He was assisted by sophomore forward Erik Higby and sophomore defenseman Wade Epp.
Senior forward Tyler Gron scored a highlight reel goal less than five minutes later to give NMU a 2-0 lead. Junior forward Matt Thurber and junior defenseman Kyle Follmer picked up the helpers. It was Gron’s 12th goal of the season.
After a scoreless second period, Miami finally got on the board when Blake Coleman scored his eighth of the season 1:53 into the third.
Coreau stopped a season-high 40 saves, including 17 in the third period and is now 8-3-2 on the season. Connor Knapp had 11 saves for the RedHawks
Miami (14-11-2, 10-9-2-1 CCHA) was 0-for-3 on the power-play after three Wildcat penalties. The RedHawks didn’t take a penalty.
Northern has allowed only one goal in each of the three meetings against Miami this season. The ‘Cats swept the RedHawks in Marquette on Dec. 2-3. The two meet for the final time of the regular season at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday (Jan. 28) evening in Oxford.
