NMU Men on road for two straight

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan men’s basketball looks to erase its road woes when it travels to Hillsdale (Jan. 21) and Northwood (Jan. 28) this week for a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contests.
The Wildcats enter the matchup at 8-9 on the season and 4-6 in the GLIAC. NMU defeated Grand Valley State (62-57) and fell to Ferris State (69-55) after dominating the first half.
Freshman guard Haki Stampley leads NMU in scoring with an average of 15.0 points per game. Senior center Jared Benson and sophomore guard Matthew Craggs have rebounded after a slow offensive start to the season, now averaging 12.6 ppg and 9.8 ppg respectively. Craggs is also second on the team in rebounding with 6.1 boards per game.
The Chargers enter the contest at 15-2 on the season and 9-1 in the GLIAC. Hillsdale sits in first place in the south division and has won 11 of its last 12 contests.
The ‘Cats are 32-19 all-time against the Chargers dating back to the 1949-50 season. Hillsdale has won five straight in the series, including a 76-73 meeting last season in Marquette.
The Timberwolves enter Saturday’s matchup at 10-6 on the season and 6-4 in the GLIAC. Northwood has won five of six and recently jumped to third place in the north division.
NMU has historically dominated the all-time series at 42-12, dating back to the 1964-65 season. The ‘Cats have won four straight in the series.
Thursday’s game is part of a doubleheader, with the women’s game set to tipoff at 6 p.m. Saturday’s matinee game is scheduled for 3 p.m..
