Former Husky Kinrade Wins AHL Championship with Binghamton
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – Former Michigan Tech defenseman Geoff Kinrade (2005-09) recently helped the Binghamton Senators win an American Hockey League championship. The Senators closed out the best-of-seven Calder Cup Finals against the Houston Aeros with a 3-2 victory in game six on Tuesday (June 7).
The Senators, the top development team of the NHL\’s Ottawa Senators, earned Binghamton\’s first championship in 29 years of hosting an American Hockey League franchise.
Binghamton won four best-of-seven series to claim the title. It overcame a 3-games-to-1 deficit in its first-round series vs. Manchester before winning in seven. The Senators went on to defeat Portland in six games and Charlotte in four games before beating Houston in the finals.
Kinrade played in 78 regular season games with the Senators this past season, compiling six goals and 19 assists. He also took the ice for all 23 of Binghamton\’s postseason games, recording one goal and four assists. His lone goal was the game-winning tally in a 2-1 victory over Manchester in the pivotal game six of Binghamton\’s opening-round series.
\”It was an amazing run,\” said Kinrade. \”We knew we had something special with this group. Quite a few of the guys had been called up to Ottawa during the year, so the first series was tough because guys hadn\’t been playing together. Once we got by Manchester, we had no doubts.\”
Kinrade played in 150 games in his career at Michigan Tech, where he tallied 14 goals and 47 assists for 61 total points.
