Henry, Jarvis Win Gold at Collegiate Nationals
MARQUETTE— United States Olympic Education Center weightlifters Allie Henry and Steve Jarvis won gold at the National Collegiate Weightlifting Championships in Shreveport, La. April 9-10.
Henry (River Falls, Wis.), a Northern Michigan University senior, won her first National Collegiate title when she lifted a total of 189 kilograms in the 69 kg division. Her total set a new personal record, ousting her old one of 180 kg.
Henry also set a new personal record in the snatch with her second lift of 86 kg, and increased her record with a final lift of 90 kg. In the clean and jerk, Henry set a personal record of 99 kg on her second lift.
“Allie had a great meet,” said coach Andy Tysz. “Two personal records in the snatch, and personal records in the clean and jerk and total. She’s been working hard. I’m very pleased with her results and happy for her. She’s gaining meet experience and really honing her ability to perform her best lifts together in competition.”
Senior Steve Jarvis (Niagara, Wis.) placed first at 105 kg. He completed all six lifts for a total personal record of 340 kg. He lifted 155 kg in the snatch and 185 in the clean and jerk.
“It’s been a while since I lifted a new personal best. It feels pretty great,” said Jarvis. “I’ve been really working on technique and it definitely made a difference.”
This is Jarvis’ first National Collegiate Championship.
“I am happy for Steve; he has had a rough go the last couple of years with injuries. This meet was to reestablish him as a person to have your eye on. He definitely did that,” said Tysz.
Junior Robin Feuerman (Altamonte Springs, Fla.) placed third at 69 kg. Her total of 166 kg (76 kg, 90 kg) caused a tie for second place. The first tiebreaker, which goes to the athlete with the lowest body weight at the time of weigh-in, was in favor of her opponent.
“Robin has had technical trouble in training, but she worked hard and put it all together very well in the competition,” said Tysz.
Sophomore Britta Carlson (Peshtigo, Wis.) and freshman Patricia Park (Rochester Hills, Mich.) placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 53 kg division. Freshman Jerilyn “Rael” Smith (Indianapolis, Ind.) placed fourth in the 75+ kg division.
In the men’s division, sophomore Andrew Vrabel (Highland, Ind.) and freshman Dean Beyers (Camas, Wash.) placed fourth in the 69 kg and 105 kg division, respectively. Junior Josh Barnett (Sanford, Fla.) placed fifth in the 62 kg division and sophomore Dan Gorelik (Moorestown, N.J.) placed eighth at 85 kg.
