Michigan Tech Track Teams Gain Academic Honors
NEW ORLEANS – Both the men’s and women’s track and field teams at Michigan Tech were honored recently as All-Academic Teams by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
The women’s team ranked tied for eighth in the nation and top’s among teams in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 3.45 cumulative grade point average.
The men’s squad finished with a 3.06 cumulative grade point average, second best in the GLIAC.
To be eligible, a team must finish the season with a cumulative grade point average above 3.0.
Senior Ken Gilkerson was also named a USTFCCCA All-Academic Honoree for outdoor track and field for the second year in a row. Student-athletes must have a cumulative grade point average above 3.30 and have posted a provisional or automatic qualifying mark.
Gilkerson finished 12th at the 2010 NCAA Div. II Outdoor Track and Field National Championships in the 800 (1:51.08). He recently graduated with a 3.94 grade point average in mechanical engineering.
