MI & France Working on Shipwreck

The state of Michigan is working with France to see if a shipwreck, thought to be near Escanaba, belonged to 17th-centure French explorer Robert De La Salle.

A federal judge in Grand Rapids postponed a hearing last week until October 15th.

Lawyer for Michigan, for France and for private diving firms recently told the judge they’ve been negotiating a joint investigation.

One of La Salle’s ships, the Griffin, sank in northern Lake Michigan in 1679.

The exact site of the wreck has never been publicly revealed.

But it’s thought to be between Escanaba and St. Martin Island, off of the Garden Peninsula.

No one has ever tried to raise the ship from the bottom of the lake.
