Smurfit-Stone Layoffs Almost Over
The long wait at one of Ontonagon County’s largest employers is just about over.
Most of the employees at the Smurfit-Stone Container mill are heading back to work 8 days from now.
The company says it sent letters Saturday to all the people it laid off, more than 130.
The letters said the mill will reopen the day after Memorial Day.
The employees were laid off at Thanksgiving, and they were originally supposed to be called back just after New Year’s.
But the date has been pushed back 5 different times.
And in January, Smurfit-Stone filed for federal Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
