Deer Sightings Dropping After Strong Start

Last week, it looked as though this year’s deer hunting season was around average.

But it’s now looking like the earlier predictions of a drop in sightings are coming true.

At the Marquette DNR station, officers say deer numbers were pretty decent last week, but they’re now reporting lower totals than usual.

Last year’s harsh winter had a lot to do with it.

Hunters still have until the end of the month to use rifles to nab the deer that are still out there, with archery and muzzleloader seasons following that.

While the numbers are low, DNR staff say they’ve checked in some pretty large deer from around the U.P.

Throughout the checks, DNR officers are also looking for chronic wasting disease.

So far, they haven’t found any infected deer.
