Possible New Use for Gladstone Plant
Gladstone’s old power plant hasn’t been used in 20 years, but it could soon be re-used as a regional job training center.
UPPCO still owns the plant, and they’ve been meeting with the U.P. Construction Council and the Michigan Boilermakers.
They’re all talking about allowing unions to use it as a training center for skilled construction workers.
There would be training in boilers, asbestos removal and electrical equipment, among other things.
The facility would be available to both local workers and those outside the area.
The talks are in the preliminary stages, and so far they’ve involved environmental and land transfer issues.
