Hispanic Heritage Month at NMU
Hispanic Heritage Month is in full swing. It lasts from September 15th, the anniversary of independence for several Latin American countries, to October 15th.
The granddaughter of Cesar Chavez, the labor leader responsible for starting the Hispanic American civil rights movement, spoke today at NMU.
“The fight for the rights of migrant farm workers continues today,” Christine Chavez said. “It’s an issue that affects all of us because we all eat the fruits and vegetables that they pick. Just because Cesar Chavez is gone, his work’s still here and there’s a lot of work that we have to do to make sure that their rights are protected.”
Many were excited to meet Chavez and to listen to her words.
Although numerous schools, parks and buildings have been named after her grandfather, Chavez says he never wanted the spotlight to be on him. He just wanted to improve the working conditions of migrant workers.
