Gwinn Student Health Clinic
Many school districts can’t afford school nurses anymore.
Gwinn had been trying to add nursing services for years, and now it has them in the high school for all students in the district.
The Marquette County Health Department and the Gwinn Area Community Schools held a ribbon–cutting for a student health clinic this morning.
The Health Department applied for a state grant last year to fund the clinic and received $175,000.
Dr. Teresa Frankovich, the medical director for the Health Department, says it’s great to have a health presence close at hand for Gwinn kids since they haven’t had one until now.
Gwinn schools superintendent Mike Maino says since he arrived in 1995, the district has been trying to add nursing services but money to do it hadn’t been available in its budget.
It has both a nurse practitioner and a health educator on duty at all times.
The clinic is open on weekdays from 9:30 to 3:30 year–round, and the grant will fund the clinic for the next 5 years.
