Secretary of State Calls for Election Reform

Michigan’s Secretary of State is calling for changes to Michigan elections.

She says she wants stronger campaign finance reform laws and expanded use of technology.

Secretary of State Ruth Johnson called for the changes in Lansing this morning.

There are thousands more registered voters in Michigan than there are people who are actually eligible to register, so there’s room for improvement.

Johnson says a 2008 report from the Pew Center on the States found that 102.54% of eligible Michigan adults were registered to vote.

The presence of those extra voters may mean the entire system is vulnerable.

She says some of the extra voters are dead, some have moved out of state and others are not U.S. citizens.

Johnson is calling the package of proposed reforms the Secure And Fair Elections Initiative, or the SAFE Initiative for short.
