New Welfare Lifetime Cash Limits

The Michigan legislature placed stricter lifetime limits on welfare cash assistance this summer.

The new limits took effect on October 1st.

Now, the Michigan Department of Human Services has issued notices to more than 11,000 Michigan families that have reached the limit in the Family Independence Program.

The notices are the fourth round of letters sent to everyone affected by the new limits.

DHS has staffed a call center for those affected by the lifetime limits to help them with benefits ranging from job placement to rent assistance.

If you’re affected by lifetime cash assistance limits, you can reach that call center at 1-855-763-3677 for help with available programs and resources.

Clients can appeal the decision within 10 days after the notice is issued, and anyone who appeals will continue to receive benefits until their case is heard.

Should the appeal not be upheld, clients would have to reimburse the state for the benefits they received since making the appeal.
